Lesson 7 · About 8 minutes
Build Credit One Step at a Time
There is no instant or guaranteed path to a particular score. Focus on actions you can afford and repeat.
Habits that can help
Use reminders or automatic payments only when you know the money will be available.
Avoid using most of a revolving limit when possible, but protect essentials first.
Understand the rate, fees, payment, and whether an application creates a hard inquiry.
If you have little or no credit history
Ask a bank or credit union about a secured credit card or credit-builder loan. Compare total costs, deposit rules, reporting practices, and refund terms before choosing. Becoming an authorized user may help in some situations, but the account owner’s activity and the company’s reporting practices matter.
Do not sacrifice necessities for a score
Food, housing, medicine, utilities, and safety come first. If a payment will be difficult, contact the creditor early and ask about available options. A credit score is a tool—not a measure of your worth.
